Today we joined millions of people and dressed in red and rode the train down town. We shoved and squeezed through the crowds to find a good spot along Broad Street where we could watch the parade honoring our World Champion Phillies. We arrived at our spot an hour and-a-half before the action so we were filling time by cheering and making friends with our neighbors and snapping photos. I snuck out to the middle of the street with Will to take some pictures of him with City Hall in the background. It's a wide street with a cement median and we stood on the median to get the pics. To get Will to look at me and look excited I asked him how big he was so he'd put his hands up for the picture. As he responded with "SO BIG!" the crowd cheered and when he dropped his hands to his sides, they were quiet again. So I asked him again and looking out at the crowd, he raised his hands to the air once more and the crowd raised their hands and cheered and hollared. It was great! So we stood there and did "So Big" 10 more times and each time Will lifted his arms the crowd cheered and raised their hands. When we stopped to take another picture the crowd on both sides of the street and up and down Broad Street for quite a few blocks started chanting: "One more time!" So Will and I showed them how big he was a few more times until all the attention got to be too much and he ran to me and buried his head between my legs. So we headed back to our place in the crowd ready to cheer for the next unplanned object of excitement. I wish I got a longer video, it was just such a great moment. I couldn't have done this with him if we practiced and planned it just right. It was one of those times when a kid just manages to capture someone's attention and do something that makes everyone smile. The parade was fun, but waiting 90+ minues for a 20 minute parade really left me thinking that today was one of those things you do just so you can say you did it. And I took Will just so I can tell him in 18 years that he saw the 2008 World Series Champions in the parade on October 31.
